Looking back at the Cosmetic Environment & Safety congress

Cosmetic Environment & Safety: A day of sharing for the sustainable future of the cosmetics industry

On July 1st, the Cosmetic Environment & Safety conference brought together key players in the sector around a common goal: to accelerate the ecological transition of the cosmetics industry.

The inaugural conference by Sandrine Berthet (DGE – Ministry of the Economy) set the tone for the day: cosmetics, a pioneering sector in the ecological transition, thanks to eco-design, sobriety and responsible innovation.

The session dedicated to water management highlighted concrete solutions:

  • Measurement of water sobriety (Marion Serre, EVEA)
  • Rapid detection of contaminants (Cécile Duclairoir, University of Rouen)
  • Effluent treatment using microalgae (Jean-Michel Pommet, ZENI)
  • Controlled industrial recycling (Sylvain Cipriani, CAP INGELEC & Maxime Plazolles, LABORATOIRES M&L)

The morning concluded with a strategic presentation by Pierre Ebran (TALENZ AUDIT) on the CSRD directive, highlighting the challenges of compliance and transparency.

An afternoon focused on action and innovation

The afternoon was devoted to the eco-design of cosmetic products and packaging, with a focus on environmental performance as a lever for competitiveness.

  • Matthieu Paillot (KISACO) opened the session with a powerful keynote address on the environmental footprint and the various assessment tools.
  • Laurent Gilbert (EcoBeautyScore Association) presented the ECOBEAUTYSCORE tool

🌱 Innovation was there:

  • Pulse, the first low-carbon alcohol from legumes (Laetitia Delaye-Beineix, Intact Regenerative)
  • Results of the Improve-Pack project on packaging optimization (Dhaou Ghoul, HIGHSYS). Project led since 2023 by COSMETIC VALLEY, in partnership with Normasys, aimed at evaluating and improving packaging systems in the cosmetics industry in the Seine Valley.

🔬 The issues of safety and recyclability of packaging were addressed by:

  • Barbara Robin-Duchesne (WatchFrog) & Frank Ponelle (Expanscience Laboratories)
  • Charlotte Thevenet (POLYMERIS), accompanied by Eastman and Texen
  • Anne-Sophie Moriceau (Intertek) & Cyntia Vialatte (ITERG)

🏅 Congratulations to Estelle REN from the University of Limoges, who was awarded the best poster prize for her work: "Development and characterization of an eco-responsible sunscreen formulation based on hydroxyapatite"

🙏Thank you to all the participants for their presence, and to all the speakers for the quality of their presentations!

Finally, the congress also launched a call for expressions of interest (CEI) on the theme of water. The objective: to identify innovative solutions to better preserve, manage, or recycle this key resource in cosmetics production. The CEI is open until September 15, 2025.
